I was in the Kalmiopsis wilderness on 9/11/01.
I was awake early for I had a schedule contact with a friend
at 7:00 am. I was on Frequency a little early testing and
announced my
call sign. My Dad called me out of breath in a state of
panic. I new something was wrong and I was fearful for my family,
mother, sister, brother and
children. He blurted out that "the trade towers had fallen
down". For the life of me I could not understand his words.
Karen and I lay
in our sleeping bags trying to understand what was said. He told
us again that some planes had hit the towers and they had fallen down.
I still could not grasp what he was saying nor understand the real
meaning of the statements. Another ham came on and
gave us an account of the time line and description of the days
events. It still did not truly register. Five days
later when we
came home and saw the film, it seemed like a Hollywood
production. But this time it was a sickening reality that has
never left.
